Vegreville RCMP are encouraging residents to join a ‘virtual crime watch community’ via a new mobile app.
The app is called Lightcatch and Constable Alex Wheadon says it essentially works as a crime tracker populated by the app’s users.
Whadon notes it allows users to share photos, videos and more in near real time – information that the RCMP can then tap into to help with investigations.
Wheadon notes in no way however is the RCMP encouraging residents to put themselves in harm’s way when it comes to tracking potential criminals.
Wheadon adds the app isn’t just for vehicle thefts, noting it could have tremendous benefits, including even in missing persons cases.
He notes it is a ‘power in numbers’ platform, meaning the more users on the app, the more potential information can be shared.
Meantime, according to the LightCatch app developers, police have said that 90% of the information needed to resolve a crime is known by the public and that they’re just simply not aware of valuable the information they may have can be.
