Former Ranger Bench Boss Earns International Hockey Assignment

Derek Sweet-Coulter, who coached the Rangers during the 2014-15 season, has been named an Assistant Coach for Team Canada West at the 2017 World Junior A Challenge, an annual under-20 international tournament showcasing Junior A level players, which this year will be played in Truro, Nova Scotia.

Sweet-Coulter is currently in his third season as head coach and GM of the English River Miners of the S.I.J.H.L. in B-C but had spent than a decade as a head coach in Alberta with teams like Onion Lake and Vegreville in the North Eastern Alberta Junior Hockey League and Rimbey of the Heritage Junior Hockey League.

Sweet-Coulter will be joined by Rick Swan, the current Head Coach and G-M of the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the A.J.H.L., as Assistants under Head Coach Mike Reagan, who’s currently the bench boss for the Flin Flon Bombers of the M.J.H.L.

Since its inception in 2006, more than 230 NHL draft picks have played in the World Junior A Challenge, including 38 first-round selections like Beau Bennett, Brock Boeser and Alexander Burmistrov.
