A Vegreville resident was honored for his years of volunteer service on Monday ...
Alan Robert was presented with the Sovereign’s Medal of Volunteers by Mayor Tim MacPhee in front of family, friends and colleagues at Monday’s Town Council Meeting.
Robert was nominated for the prestigious award by Fire Chief Phil Rowe as well as past Fire Chief and current Town Councilor Jerold Lemko for his years of dedication to the community; be it through local sports, Alclub Bingo, the Old Vegreville Historical Society or his 29 years of service to the Vegreville Fire Department.
Robert, while crediting his family for allowing him the time to be available for his community, says the medal is an unexpected honour.
He credits a conversation with his late father for instilling a passion for volunteering.
The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers is an official Canadian honour created by the Crown.
It recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of Canadians from across the country in a wide range of fields and is the only honour for volunteerism given by the governor general of Canada.
