RCMP Warn of Rising Vehicle Thefts in Cold Weather

The RCMP is reminding the public to not leave their vehicles unattended while they are running; these vehicles are easy targets for theft

RCMP around the province are reminding the public to not leave their vehicles unattended while they are running. These vehicles are easy targets for theft.

With the recent cold snap, RCMP in many communities have seen a spike in vehicle theft. Although most of these crimes are considered crimes of opportunity, the RCMP want to remind the public that criminals are actively looking for easy vehicles to steal.

Corporal Leigh Drinkwater with the Vegreville RCMP says that vehicles that are left running and unlocked outside of homes, grocery stores, or even gas stations make for easy targets for criminals.

The RCMP are providing the following advice to help thwart vehicle theft and reduce crime:

  • Lock your vehicle. Most vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicles occur to vehicles that are left unlocked.
  • Remove all valuables from your vehicle.
  • Report any suspicious activity you might see in your neighbourhood.
  • Try to park your vehicle in well-lit areas.
