Influenza Outbreak Not Expected in Vegreville

While Alberta Health Services cautions the province may be in it's first flu out break of the season, it's having a minimal impact in Vegreville

Alberta Health Services is reporting that the province may be in the early stages of a flu outbreak, reporting that five people have died this flu season, four of which were not vaccinated.

Owner of Value Drug Mart and Pharmacist Curtis Hirsch says that he doesn't expect an outbreak to happen in Vegreville, citing last year's outbreaks in the community and in the Senior Citizens Centre have not cropped up again yet this year.

He attributes better advertising by A-H-S, and acknowledging they missed the mark in which strains to inoculate against last year.

Hirsch says he feels the chance of an outbreak is small but still encourages anyone who isn’t immunized to get a flu shot to protect themselves and those who can’t receive a flu shot.

Hirsch notes that they have already vaccinated about 500 people this season at his location, a 100% increase on last year.

Flu shots are available until April from your pharmacy or the Health Unit
