Elk Island Public School Ordered to Drop "Public" From Name

Alberta school boards are being told to remove the word "Public" from their names, including Elk Island Public School Board

Eight Alberta school boards are being told to remove the word "Public" from their names, including Elk Island Public School Board. The change took effect September 1 as part of the Education Act.

Board Chair of Elk Island Public School Board, Trina Boymook, says that it has come as a surprise.

Boymook adds that there is confusion about what it will mean for them.

Boymook adds that if everything is to be rebranded, it would come at a significant cost. Catholic and Francophone school boards do not have to remove the words "Catholic" and "Francophone" from their names.
